Book Signing and Reading with Jerry D. Mathes II

  • Saturday, September 12th, 7 p.m.
  • Free, Opened to Public

"Jerry Mathes's poems come not from concepts, but from his life, first his experiences working on an Alaskan fishing boat in the Bering Sea, later as a firefighter in forests of the northwest. Many of these poems are georgics of a sort, not so much about nature itself, but about hard work in the elements. Whether about a blown engines, fringe towns that have known better days, wolves, horses, boatyards, timber mills, or his beloved daughters, these poems quickly arrest attention with trustworthy language backed by a coherent sensibility that transmits experience made familiar and compelling. The Journal West, Mathes's debut volume, is an impressive one"-Peter Makuck

Instrument Petting Zoo!

McCall Public Library is seeking volunteers to bring their instruments and let children explore musical sounds.  When kids can touch, hear, and play instruments, they learn how music is produced and their creativity is sparked.  The "Petting Zoo" means that elementary aged children can stroll around the library grounds, find an instrument they'd like to try, and play it.  We will provide alcohol wipes for sanitizing mouth pieces.  Remember, instruments WILL be handled by children.  Please stay with your instruments and guide children on how to use them.  Thanks!

Tuesday, June 23, 2009; 1:15 - 2:15 pm; McCall Public Library, 218 E. Park St.

Idaho State Historical Society Presents:

Idaho's Concrete Bridges
Though little appreciated, Idaho's historic concrete bridges have long served motorists safely - with more than a little style. The Idaho highway system has over 300 State-owned concrete bridges built prior to 1961. From the interstates to back country scenic routes, the bridges come in variety of sizes and styles.

Don Watts of the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office will host a presentation of the outstanding bridges found in Idaho. He will also discuss bridge types and how to identify them. In addition, Watts will be showing views of rare bridges or bridges that no longer exist. The presentation will take place at McCall Public Library on October 30th at 6.30 p.m. Free to the public; snacks on hand.

Get the Smartest Card @ your library®

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the McCall Public Library wants to make sure that your child has smartest card of all - a library card.  Sign up for a new library card this month and receive our colorful new McCall library water bottle for free!
Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. "A library card has always been the most important school supply of all," says Anne Kantola, Library Director and veteran teacher.  "Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun.  There's a lot happening at McCall's library." A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together.  Forty-four percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.
Activities to celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month will include story time visits to local daycares, preschools and kindergarten classes, as well as the free water bottle giveaways at the library, to help your family "squeeze the most out of your future."
